A magic pill transforms gas grilling into something wonderful: carbon deposits fall into the drip tray.

Over time, a thick layer of combustion residue builds up on gas stove grates—residue that cannot be removed using conventional cleaning methods. To keep my kitchen clean, I have been using a special method for several years that quickly eliminates soot and grease. I have a cast-iron grate, but this method works just as well on grates made of other metals. Dishwasher tablets: a versatile cleaning agent.

First, you need a pot large enough to hold the grate; fill it with water and place it on the stove. Add two dishwasher tablets to the water. Bring the water to a boil, then place the grate inside and let it boil for about half an hour. As soon as you remove the grate from the hot water, you should clean it immediately using a suitable tool, such as a sponge or a brush.

The combination of hot water and the ingredients in the tablets softens the grease, making it easy to remove. Any stubborn residue remaining can be scraped off with a knife.
